About Viston Bancha tea

Our loose leaf Bancha tea has a delicate and grassy flavor that is bold and satisfying. It's one of the simplest Japanese teas, made from the later harvest of the same tree Sencha is made from. Flat-pressed leaves unfold to create a light-green, mild, sweet, and grassy infusion. The charm of Bancha tea is it's simplicity, also making it a great tea for beginner tea drinkers.

What is Bancha tea?

Japanese Bancha, unlike Chinese green teas, is steamed rather than withered and roasted to halt oxidation. The color of the leaves becomes brighter and more intense green. It is made from later harvest and is less-prized than Sencha tea, and is the second most-consumed tea in Japan. It, however, has less astringency and less of an umami taste, making it simple to appreciate. It's also low in caffeine, so it's suitable for people with caffeine sensitivity. Bancha means "everyday" tea in Japanese and its simplicity makes it the perfect tea for first-time green tea drinkers.

What makes our Bancha tea great

  • Viston Bancha is low in caffeine, so it can be consumed by people with caffeine sensitivity.
  • Viston Bancha tea is simple to appreciate, so it's the perfect first green tea for beginner tea drinkers.
  • Can be re-steeped multiple times.
  • Can be used for refreshing cold-brew teas.

Brewing instructions for Bancha tea

Green teas require more attention to prevent them from tasting bitter, Japanese green teas especially. We recommend this method:

  1. Put 2 teaspoons (2-3g) of loose tea per 1 cup (~250ml) of water in a teapot.
  2. Pour hot, but not boiling water (75-80°C) on the loose tea.
  3. Let the tea steep for 1 minute.
  4. Strain the tea leaves and keep them for re-steeping later.
  5. Let the tea cool down a bit and enjoy!
  6. Re-steep again, slightly increasing the brewing time.

Note: The traditional Japanese way is to use boiling water and steep for 15-30 seconds, but we've found our recommended preparation instructions to give us the most satisfying results.
