Genmaicha is a Japanese tea where Bancha green tea is mixed with roasted rice. It's also known as "Popcorn" tea because some rice pop during the roasting. In the old days, it used to be considered a poor man's tea in Japan, however, it is now being consumed by all parts of society.
There are many stories about its invention. One of the most popular ones tells the story of a 15th-century samurai who had his servant prepare him some tea when some grains of rice accidentally slipped from his sleeve into the master's cup. The samurai, in a fit of rage, beheaded the servant, but when he sat down to drink his tea, he realized that the rice actually added a nice flavor to his tea. Feeling remorseful, he called the tea by the name of his late servant - Genmai.
We don't know if the story is true, however, we do know, that roasted rice makes this tea amazingly fragrant and flavorful.
Genmaicha can get bitter if the water temperature is too high or tea is over-steeped. Our recommended way to prepare it is this (Note - there's a mistake on the package)
Note: The traditional Japanese way is to use boiling water and steep for 15-30 seconds, but we've found our recommended preparation instructions to give us the most satisfying results.
